Brucells : Therapeutic cellular vaccines

Brucells

Website : www.brucells.com

News : http://www.brucells.com/taxonomy/term/17

BruCells was set up April 2002 in order to proceed with the development of therapeutic cellular vaccines based on patents and know-how developed by the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) and Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB). The scientific collaboration was extended in 2003 to the Université Catholique de Louvain (UCL) and the Brussels branch of the Institut Ludwig for cancer research (LICR). The developments are financed in part by the industrial partners and by grants from the government of the Brussels-Capital region.

These vaccines use the unique properties of Dendritic cells (DCs), a small sub-population of white cells in order to activate the sentinels of the immune system (lymphocytes-T). By artificially grafting the dendritic cells with the antigens associated with tumours, it is possible to teach the immune system of the patient to destroy his own cancer cells.

The company is currently developing two types of vaccine, notably:

1. Dendritic cells fused with tumorous cells;
2. Dendritic cells fused ex-vivo with proteins or peptides associated with the antigens of tumours.

Since 2006, the company has been concentrating on therapeutic vaccines based on allogenic cells stemming from cell lines.

The company produces and also markets a limited number of cytokines of a clinical nature used in the preparation of cancer vaccines.

IBt : Contributing to saving lives!

IBT

Website : www.ibt-bebig.eu

News : http://www.ibt-bebig.eu/en/sidenavigation/press/press_releases.html

IBt Bebig is an international medical equipment company whose activities are concentrated on the growing and technologically evolving sector of cancer treatment by radiotherapy.

The aim of IBt Bebig is to develop and manufacture top of the range products for the well-being of patients. Its products are designed not only with a view to maintaining proven clinical efficiency, but also to reduce side effects for the patients and optimal radioprotection for the treating doctors. The low-output radioactive sources for the treatment of tumours by brachtherapy places IBt Bebig among the leaders in the European market.

Radio isotope therapy, also called brachytherapy, is a form of radiotherapy. This procedure makes it possible to introduce the source of radiation around or directly into the tumour (“brachy” comes from the Greek word meaning “short”) in contrast with (“tele” coming from the Greek word for “long”) where the body receives radiation from an external source. The direct distribution of rays in the affected tissues as well as protection of the surrounding healthy tissues are the principal advantages of radio isotope therapy.

One of the forms of radio isotope therapy for prostate cancer is the implanting of radioactive sources, the seeds or granules of iodine in the prostate tissues: these radioactive grains which are only a few millimetres long, are implanted with the help of a needle through the perineum and controlled by ultrasound. The operation generally takes place without hospitalisation, that is to say that the patient can leave the clinic the same day.

IT4IP : Ion track technology for innovative products

it4ip_logo

Website : www.it4ip.be

News : http://www.it4ip.be/fr_FR/news.html

IT4IP produces and supplies Hi-Tec polymeric membranes. IT4IP develops, produces and supplies unique polymeric membranes based on patented “track etching” technologies. IT4IP aims to become a company specialising in the supply of “track-etched” products in high value added markets in areas as diverse as health, energy and electronics – and to be recognised as the benchmark supplier of these solutions.

Track-etching technology is based on the irradiation of a polymer layer or film with energetic heavy ions leading to the formation of latent linear tracks characterised by damaged tracks in the polymer; these tracks are then revealed into pores using a well-chosen chemical. This track-etching technology is used to manufacture porous polymer membranes characterised by a smooth flat surface and a sharp cut-off.
